Walking into the grand atrium of Jambo House at Christmastime feels like you leave Florida behind to step into a postcard from one of Africa’s most luxurious resorts. The moment the doors glide open, you’re greeted by the soft glow of warm lighting that entices you in. From the rich wood floors to the reds of the fan style chandeliers, the warmth of this deluxe resort will have you feel cozy and welcomed upon entry.
A towering 45-foot Christmas tree, dressed in traditional African ornaments and warm lights, commands the center of the room. Taking a closer look, you will find wood carved animals, bows made of traditional fabrics, wood beaded garlands and more. When visiting, take the time to look at all the fine details of the ornaments that make this tree a standout amongst the Walt Disney World Resorts.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge consists of two separate buildings, Jambo House and Kidani Village. Jambo House is significantly larger than Kidani Village, but both are equal in their beauty and detail. The Animal Kingdom Lodge was inspired by the traditional African kraal which is a curved horseshoe-like shape. In the center of this is the savannah that is home to over 30 species of animals.
Wildlife Viewing and African Art
Viewing decks and walking paths allow you to get up close to animals like zebra, giraffe, kudu, gazelle and many more hooved animals and birds. You can also find animal specialists who can help you identify animals. Or grab a Wildlife Field Guide from your room or the front desk and see how many you can spot!
We were blessed to have a savannah facing view. From our room’s balcony, we watched a baby zebra frolic with their mother. A baby giraffe was running with joy across the savannah to follow the cart bringing out fresh food. I wanted to skip going to any of the theme parks just to sit on my balcony all day.

While I do think the savannah view is worth the splurge, a non-savannah view will still have you enjoying this beautiful resort. You can get the same views from off the atrium; you just don’t get the convenience of getting to hang out from your room.
The Animal Kingdom Lodge has one of the largest collections of African art in the United States! I implore you to explore both buildings of this resort to find as many pieces of art that you can.
Shopping
There are two places to shop in the lodge. Johari Treasures (Kidani Village) and Zawadi Marketplace (Jambo House). Both contain traditional African items, like hand carved animals. In fact, there was someone there carving them in the store and it was fascinating to watch their artistry live. You will also find Animal Kingdom Lodge merchandise that is exclusive to the hotel. Disney World merchandise can also be found along with snacks and other items you may have forgotten to pack.
Dining at Boma
We dined at Boma- Flavors of Africa which is in Jambo house. This is an all-you-can-eat buffet that had us going back for plate after plate. The food was predominantly African inspired. In terms of flavor, this was not a typical Disney buffet. While there are several menu items for pickier eaters, I recommend trying something new. A buffet is the perfect way to experience new cuisines and flavors since you can just put a small amount on your plate of everything and go back for what you love. The food was incredibly fresh and had flavors I’ve never experienced. The African spiced beef striploin with the mustard grain style sauce was incredible and the best part of the menu. I still dream about it and my mouth waters at the thought of that sauce.
Swimming Pools
I did not use a swimming pool while staying at this resort. That’s because we had free entry to Blizzard Beach before check-in. All our water recreation needs were met there. But I did take a walk along the stunning 11,000 square foot pool, complete with waterslide! My main objective in heading toward the pool was to visit the flamboyance of flamingos (my favorite type of bird) that were nearby.
Transportation
The transportation to the theme parks from this resort is via bus. I personally prefer the bus to something like the Skyliner, which in my experience are a nightmare. Especially if you are rope dropping and taking advantage of early entry into the park. Those early buses are decently easy to get on.
Rooms
The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated with wood-carved headboards, mirrors and closets. Two queen beds allowed us to fit 3 adults easily in each room. As previously stated, the best part of the room is the balcony overlooking the savannah. The animals are what set this resort apart and the main attraction.
The rooms are incredibly clean, and the bathrooms are stocked with my favorite scent in the world, Disney’s bodywash. I don’t know who makes it, but the joy it brings me is endless. Any time I smell it, I think of fond memories of Disney Cruises and Disney resort stays. For a room tour, you can find one on the blog’s YouTube.
If you find yourself at The Animal Kingdom Lodge this holiday season, or any season for that matter, I hope you have an incredible time. This hotel is one of the best experiences I have ever had at the Walt Disney World Resort. This is by far the most luxurious hotel I have ever stayed in. It felt like I got to have a taste of what it would be like to go to an African safari lodge, I hope in the future, my travels can take me there. In the meantime, I will always think fondly of my time at Jambo House. Have a joyous journey!
